This is the commentary on Chapter 2.
Knuckles is abducted by Regina, but with the help of Shadow and Sonic, he safely returns to the sanctuary.
However, the ordeal leaves him emotionally wounded, and he becomes afraid of the night.
A similar story can be found in Greek mythology: the ordeal and return of Persephone, who was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld.
After Persephone is abducted by Hades, Zeus intervenes, allowing her to return to the earth when spring comes. Yet what happened to her leaves its mark on the world itself—the changing of the seasons.
The ordeal of Knuckles, the Earth Mother Goddess.
At night, he falls apart.

But he is falling apart only on the inside.
His function as the Divine Mother and Earth Mother Goddess has not been broken.
Even as he crumbles within, he does not abandon his role. He continues to carry his nightmares and fear.
Night is the entrance to the underworld.
When night falls, the return of his fear and nightmares allows the underworld to begin infiltrating him.
And then he begins trying to close the sanctuary, telling everyone, “Don’t come here.”
Shadow leaves Knuckles for a time and tries to return to his original role.
But his heart remains captive, and he cannot forget him.
He does not even understand why he cannot forget.
And yet, he cannot bring himself to return to the sanctuary either.
Then Sonic, the angel, notices that something is wrong with both the sanctuary and Knuckles.
As a trickster, Sonic steps between the Divine Mother and the Judge of the Underworld, acting as a mediator and keeping the balance between them.
He does not break open the sanctuary—he does not expose Knuckles’ weakness.
He stops Shadow—this is not the time to touch Knuckles.
He maintains the atmosphere—inside the cabin, he simply keeps talking and talking.
It is an important role.
But Sonic is an immature angel who is half human.
He and Shadow end up fighting over whether or not the Divine Mother should be touched.
Shadow believes that holding Knuckles would help him, and reaches out to touch him.
But Sonic stops him.
Knuckles is trying to close the sanctuary.
Shadow is trying to force his way into the sanctuary.
The angel understands that the Divine Mother cannot recover that way.

The angel understands that the Divine Mother cannot recover that way.
And then, inside the cabin, the three of them—the Divine Mother (Knuckles), the brother-knight (Sonic), and the pilgrim knight (Shadow)—spend a peaceful night together.
It is a ritual for safely passing through the night, when the entrance to the underworld opens.
Then comes Shadow’s vow:
“I’ll come back.”
A promise that his pilgrimage will continue, and be repeated.
And in his dream, Knuckles welcomes someone who comes to visit, just as he always has, and accepts them.

The sanctuary opens once more, and its former peace returns.
This is a story about the restoration of the sanctuary, and the quiet loyalty of knights who save the wounded Divine Mother not by touching him, but by remaining there with him.
