On the surface, the main story of Terra<\/em> reads like a fairly ordinary (?) BL novel. But the entire story is structured as a mythological narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For readers who are interested in how, exactly, Terra<\/em> is mythological, this commentary will explore the mythological structures underlying the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mythology of Terra<\/em> is a heroic tale in which several structures overlap: journeys to and from the underworld, myths of death and rebirth, sacred marriage, and chivalric myth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow, the Judge of the Underworld (*1) and a solitary hero, yearns for Knuckles, the Divine Mother (*2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toward this Divine Mother\u2014the object of his devotion\u2014Shadow simultaneously feels a longing for his soul to return home, a yearning for maternal love, religious devotion, romantic longing, and sexual desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though tormented by these feelings, he makes a pilgrimage through sacred places for the Divine Mother and continues to fight for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you simply want to enjoy the story as it is, it is, in other words, a ShadKnux romance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, let\u2019s look at Chapter 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angel Island = the sanctuary, the center of the world<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knuckles = the Divine Mother, the guardian, the Earth Mother Goddess<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow = a god of the underworld (the Judge), a traveler from a foreign land<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wound = a blood covenant (a rite of passage)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the story of Terra<\/em>, Angel Island is a sanctuary and the center of the world\u2014something like Mount Olympus, Takamagahara, or the Garden of Eden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Into that sanctuary come the drones, foreign intruders that defile it. Shadow destroys them and is injured in place of the Divine Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knuckles, the guardian of the sanctuary, tends to Shadow\u2019s wounds, gives him food, and gently strokes him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This scene of care also has a mythological structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tending the wound = a rite of passage<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food = sacred communion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holding his hand, stroking him = blessing and acceptance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so Shadow, a visitor from a foreign land, is wounded while protecting the Divine Mother and the sanctuary. He is cared for by the Divine Mother and thereby gains the right to belong within the sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then a major change begins to take place within Shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He becomes aware of the sacred nature of the Divine Mother\u2014or rather, he begins to be \u201cinfiltrated\u201d by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow does not fully understand the change taking place inside him. Yet he pretends to still be ill so that he can remain there, and he cannot bring himself to stop being stroked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tries to observe and record what is happening, but fails\u2014he points a camera at Knuckles, then throws it away. By this point, even Shadow himself no longer understands what is happening to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the initial stage of devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he has not chosen to devote himself of his own free will. The sacred has begun to infiltrate him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow\u2019s feelings are complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious devotion. Comfort. Dependence. Possessiveness. Sexual desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are all still undifferentiated, mixed together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why even Shadow himself cannot process them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cannot understand what is happening within him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there is Sonic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonic is both a trickster and an angel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Shadow\u2019s perspective\u2014as the Judge of the Underworld, already being infiltrated by the sacred and beginning to turn into a devotee\u2014Sonic is someone who treats it all as play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Sonic already belongs within the sanctuary, and that playful familiarity is natural to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Sonic\u2019s perspective, Shadow is the \u201coutsider who only showed up recently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their different ways of treating and responding to Knuckles\u2019 sacred nature bring them into conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the Divine Mother is abducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loss of the Divine Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This marks the beginning of the protagonist\u2019s heroic journey and his battles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beginning of the myth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Stage 1 boss: Regina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She represents \u201cdistorted motherhood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stands in direct opposition to Knuckles\u2019 sacred nature as the Divine Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Divine Mother vs. distorted motherhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This opposition appears repeatedly throughout the mythology of Terra<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What stands directly against Knuckles\u2019 sacred nature and motherhood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motherhood that has become distorted and corrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knuckles is male, but within the mythology of Terra<\/em>, he is both the \u201cDivine Mother\u201d and the \u201cBride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I am depicting here is motherhood embodied in masculinity and in a male god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power to accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not pass judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not preach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not reject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the powerful gravity of the sun, he draws the world toward himself, receives it, and simply continues to stand there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is Knuckles\u2019 motherhood as the Earth Mother Goddess and the Divine Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(If I were to name a deity whose nature comes close to this sacred quality in Knuckles, it would be Amaterasu Omikami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kanoko, the author, is Japanese, so when I think, \u201cI want to write a myth. I want to depict a Divine Mother\u2014a receptive deity possessing both sacredness and motherhood,\u201d I seem to inevitably find myself influenced by the Kojiki<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of divine role or function, Knuckles may bear some resemblance to Ishtar of ancient Mesopotamia, Inanna of Sumer, or Demeter of Greek mythology. But in terms of nature, Amaterasu Omikami feels the closest to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her very existence illuminates the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply by disappearing, she plunges the world into darkness.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, in order to rescue Knuckles, Shadow travels with Sonic, his brother-knight, into the underworld\u2014Regina\u2019s stronghold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some ways, this resembles the stories of Orpheus in Greek mythology and Izanagi in the Kojiki<\/em>: journeys into the underworld to recover a beloved wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then Shadow rescues Knuckles and makes his vow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A declaration of himself as a knight who will protect the Divine Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beginning of his pilgrimage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But at the same time, he also becomes aware of his own desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 1 is the story of Shadow, the Judge of the Underworld, pledging his loyalty to Knuckles, the Divine Mother, and beginning his pilgrimage of devotion while carrying desire within his heart. (*3)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(*1) On Shadow\u2019s mythological role as the \u201cJudge of the Underworld.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow\u2019s role here is not that of a \u201chuman,\u201d but that of a \u201cgod.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, it is the role of a complete, fully realized being\u2014a higher existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even in Chapter 1, Shadow coldly passes judgment on Sonic for his games: being overly spoiled by Knuckles, dressing Knuckles up in costumes, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Ultimate Life Form, Shadow originally has no need for anyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after coming into contact with Knuckles\u2019 sacred nature and motherhood, he begins to desire them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so he falls from his absolute position as a god of the underworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some ways, this resembles stories in which Hades, god of the underworld, becomes obsessed with Persephone of the world above, or in which the angel Lucifer is transformed by desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow, however, does not \u201cfall from grace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor does he become a sinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He becomes humanized\u2014emotions begin to emerge within him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The perfect Judge, Shadow, is melted by Knuckles\u2019 all-embracing nature, and his heart becomes human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so he begins to experience human emotions: religious devotion, dependence, possessiveness, sexual desire, jealousy, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, all of these converge into \u201clove.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, seeking \u201csalvation,\u201d he begins his pilgrimage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mythology of Terra<\/em> is a story of salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The salvation of the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe story of Knuckles bringing salvation to Shadow\u2019s lonely soul.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(*2) On the meaning of \u201cDivine Mother\u201d in the Terra<\/em> series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Christianity, the Holy Mother is a human being who gave birth to God; she is not herself a god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Terra<\/em> series, however, the term \u201cDivine Mother\u201d is used in an entirely different sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, it is an accessible way of referring to an \u201cEarth Mother Goddess,\u201d a \u201cdeity of motherhood and acceptance,\u201d or a \u201cbeing who possesses both motherhood and sacredness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is completely different in meaning from the Christian concept of the Holy Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please keep this distinction in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
