This is the commentary on Chapter 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow has become a knight of the Divine Mother, but he was originally the Judge of the Underworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a higher being\u2014a god\u2014he possesses a powerful function and will of his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he obtains information about the remnants of Regina\u2019s forces, who still have not learned their lesson and are once again trying to defile the sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting out of good intentions, Shadow decides to protect the sanctuary \u201con his own,\u201d without permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A god\u2014the Judge of the Underworld\u2014has entered the domain of another god\u2014the Divine Mother\u2014on his own authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Divine Mother realizes what has happened, he is furious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because although Knuckles is the Divine Mother, he is also the Guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protecting the sanctuary is his role. For another god to take that role upon himself without permission is an intrusion into his domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little earlier, in the flower field, Shadow is captivated by Knuckles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an ideal paradise, like Elysium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, the Earth Mother Goddess stands upon the earth and manifests his beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this moment, Shadow feels both devotion and desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he does not clearly put either of them into words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having angered the Divine Mother, the Judge of the Underworld passes judgment on himself and voluntarily relinquishes his right to stand within the sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, he cannot sever his feelings for Knuckles, and so he goes to the angel Sonic for advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonic is the playful rogue of the sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an angel, he does properly fulfill his role as a mediator, but there is always something lighthearted about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fundamentally, his manner and rhythm simply do not mesh with Shadow\u2019s, the Judge of the Underworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow is hurt by Sonic\u2019s provocation and leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, he follows Sonic\u2019s advice and tries to learn the order of the sanctuary anew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then comes the amusement park scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A prank worthy of Sonic the trickster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He deliberately calls Shadow there, stirs up his jealousy, and provokes him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then comes the kiss on the cheek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think this is somewhat similar to one of Cupid\u2019s arrows, used by Eros in Greek mythology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mythological terms, Sonic is a figure somewhat like Hermes in Greek mythology or Loki in Norse mythology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He acts unpredictably and completely transforms the situation around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And because he is an immature being who is half angel and half human, half of what he does works, while the other half fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow ends up punching him with all his might and sending him flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow\u2019s jealousy explodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Knuckles was jealous too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then the two of them talk things through and reconcile inside the Ferris wheel gondola\u2014a private, enclosed space rising toward the heavens\u2014with the angel watching over them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here again, half of what Sonic does works, while the other half fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonic quickly jumps to his own conclusion: two people who are not quite lovers yet making up means a kiss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knuckles kicks him away, and the two of them end up fighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then comes the sunset scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, Shadow is confronted with the beauty of the Divine Mother, and this time, he feels complete desire within him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tries to kiss Knuckles, but stops just short and pushes him away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow\u2019s heart has not yet become integrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotion, romantic longing, sexual desire, possessiveness, and self-condemnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He still cannot determine which of these represents his true feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, he pushes Knuckles away and brings everything to a halt for the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thinking about the next time he will see Knuckles, Shadow\u2019s story continues into Chapter 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
