This is the commentary for Chapter 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the previous chapter, the first \u201cresonance of souls\u201d occurred between Shadow and Knuckles, creating an intensely mythological bond between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 6, however, is the story of the Divine Mother descending into human society and attempting to fight as a warrior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of the chapter, on Angel Island, Shadow and Knuckles spend a quiet moment together inside the hut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow denies his desires\u2014romantic longing and sexual desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knuckles is unable to put his own feelings into words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, Shadow comes to the island with cookies, and Knuckles welcomes him with fruit juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quiet happiness that neither of them can put into words exists between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Shadow has to leave the sanctuary for a mission. And without telling Knuckles any of the details, he leaves him behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, Shadow clearly tells Knuckles how he feels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d rather not have you thinking that just because I can\u2019t come for a while, I\u2019ve forgotten about this island\u2014or about you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He never uses the language of romance\u2014nothing like \u201cI like you\u201d or \u201cI want to be with you.\u201d But he explicitly tells Knuckles that he will not forget him, and that he does not want Knuckles to think he has forgotten him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knuckles does not understand the abstract language of romance. But these words from Shadow, he can understand. And because he understands them, he can accept them and continue to wait for Shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they make a promise for the future: when Shadow returns, the two of them will eat the cookies together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And through Rouge, Knuckles willingly ventures into human society in order to help Shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town of Gillian is symbolic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polluted air. Poor public safety. An underground atmosphere. A city at night, swirling with desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These elements are the complete opposite of the sanctuary Knuckles guards\u2014Angel Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a consumer society of desire, inhabited by people living in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And into that world, the Divine Mother steps forward as a warrior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, the \u201cAnti-Ultimate Life Form\u201d\u2014an entity created to kill Shadow, and therefore a threat to the world\u2014appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow\u2019s existence itself has the potential to bring calamity upon the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the Ultimate Life Form, Shadow bears alone the \u201csin of having been born into this world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because he is the Ultimate Life Form, his very existence may bring calamity upon the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knuckles intuitively understands the loneliness Shadow carries in relation to that original sin, and tries to support him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow sees himself as the center of that calamity\u2014a dangerous existence\u2014and tries to distance himself from Knuckles. But Knuckles senses that loneliness and descends into human society in order to support him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, the good intentions of the Divine Mother and the Judge of the Underworld cross paths and miss each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then Knuckles disguises himself as a woman and begins infiltrating a corrupt underground club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Divine Mother is turned into a commodity and sexually consumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rouge represents human society and human romance. She carries the weight of reality and moves through it with a strong sense of balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cui, as the observer, views Knuckles calmly and objectively without becoming overly invested. He simply watches, evaluates, and explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so Knuckles prepares to take a dangerous risk for Shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without Shadow ever knowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
